What is Ecological Restoration?

By definition, ecological restoration is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed. However, the Society for Ecological Restoration now broadly characterizes ecological restoration with a suite of guiding principles that are as dynamic as the ecosystems we endeavor to restore.

  • Ecological restoration is.... - engaging and inclusive of nature and culture - an integration of knowledge and practice - policy relevant - practiced locally with global implications

Ecological restoration is more than just planting trees. It is changing an area of land into a healthy ecosystem which provides functions to benefit multiple aspects of local communities, and the world.

Why DO Ecological Restoration?

A healthy and functional ecosystem provides many benefits including food and shelter for wildlife, erosion control, cleaning air and water, as well as aesthetic, spiritual, and recreational benefits for the community around it. When an area of land becomes degraded, it loses these qualities. The act of ecological restoration focuses on the recovery of nature from while connecting the local community to nature, and each other.
